It can take your cat about a week to two to adapt to its new environment. Some cats take cover, defend themselves, or display unwanted behavior while you are away. There are several things that you can do as a cat owner that will make it easier and prepare your pet for your vacation.
If your feline stays behind while you go on holiday, ask their sitter to meet with them as often as possible before your leave, that way the cat will already be familiar with them. The sitter should give your cat a treat or let them play with their preferred toys. This will encourage your cat to relax.
Your suitcase should be out a week before your vacation. Let your cat get used to it. Ask your kitty sitter to follow the same daily routine you do. The timing of food, playtime, grooming, seating sessions, etc should be followed as strictly as achievable to decrease your cat’s stress. If you know things will change while you are away, implement the changes a few days before your departure so that your cat gets used to it without the added pressure of your absence.
You can also leave an item that smells like you behind. This helps your little lion feel comforted. Some would also enjoy your recorded voice! Just be sure to test this before you go on your vacation.
