Bit is a measure of horse’s mouth. Horses have teeth in their mouths, but they don’t use them like humans do because horses are herbivorous and chew the cud. Bit measures how far horses can open their jaws wide without moving their head sideways too much. A bit that accommodates the animal’s need to be able to graze while eating will allow it to eat more food with less effort than one that requires greater extension by the horse
There is no standard size for horse bits, but there are some guidelines to follow. The most important thing to remember when buying a bit is the horse’s mouth. Read more in detail here: horse bit sizes chart.
